25. Ford Escape
140,968 sold
The Ford Escape fits squarely in the booming compact crossover segment, and its sales numbers reflect that. However, the model didn't surpass its all-time sales record set in 2017. Part of the blame can be laid on carmakers' inventory issues in 2021. The Escape's sales dropped even further last year, with over 5,000 fewer units sold in 2023 compared to 2022.
24. Subaru Forester
152,566 sold
The Subaru Forester made the top 25 this year at number 24. As you'll see going forward, this makes it the third Subaru to make the list. More drivers are discovering that its versatility and great fuel economy make it a practical option for families.
23. Mazda CX-5
153,808 sold
Mazda cracked the top 25 again for the fourth year in a row. The CX-5 is by far the brand's best-performing vehicle when it comes to sales numbers. This single model makes up a majority of all Mazdas sold in the U.S. In 2023, the Mazda CX-5 sold nearly 2,000 more units than in 2022.
22. Jeep Wrangler
156,581 sold
A couple of years ago, Jeep's iconic boxy off-roader was the brand's top seller. The excitement has died down from a redesign released a couple of years ago, but the new plug-in electric version in 2023 may have helped boost things.
21. Subaru Crosstrek
159,193 sold
Subaru had a pretty good year, with an increase in sales across the board. The automaker has three models on the top 25 list for 2023. That's an improvement from a couple of years ago. While we think the Crosstrek is just a lifted wagon, all of the sporty plastic cladding draws buyers to this "crossover."
20. Subaru Outback
161,814 sold
The Outback managed to become Subaru's best-selling vehicle once again. Technically, it's a station wagon (and the only station wagon on the list), but don't tell the masses! They've convinced themselves that the Outback is a "short" crossover. Whatever works because the sales numbers don't lie.
19. Toyota Highlander
169,543 sold
For 2023, the Highlander dropped to the 19th spot, down from 11th place the previous year. Sales were down 24%. There aren't many options for three-row hybrid SUVs. Having the best fuel economy numbers in its class probably helps it, at least, stay on the list.
18. Ford Explorer
186,799 sold
Ford bungled the rollout of the redesigned 2020 Explorer when it was released in the calendar year 2019. With production issues, low availability, and competition from a newly redesigned Toyota Highlander, the Explorer dropped -5.5% compared to 2021. For 2023, sales had dropped even further by nearly 10%.
17. Honda Accord
197,947 sold
The Honda Accord saw a boost in sales last year with over 40,000 more than the previous year. Even though we prefer the Honda Accord over its competitor, the Toyota Camry, the Camry outsold it by a considerable margin. Thanks to a successful redesign, the Accord saw a 28% increase in sales.
16. Honda Civic
200,381 sold
The aggressively sporty design language that Honda has chosen for its latest generation of the Civic has pushed the compact car ahead of its compact competitors. However, it still lags behind America's best-selling cars, the Camry and Corolla. Sales were up almost 50% in 2023.
15. Hyundai Tucson
209,624 sold
In past years, Hyundai's top seller was the Elantra. Now, Hyundai has caught up with the rest of the industry by having a compact crossover as its #1 model. With a spunky redesign in 2021 (sold as a 2022 model year), the sales of the Tucson may keep climbing higher and higher. In 2023, the Tucson saw a 27% increase in sales.
14. Chevrolet Equinox
212,701 sold
Chevy only has two models on this list of top 25 best-sellers. The Equinox is consistently Chevrolet's second-best performer (after the Silverado). But it took a tumble in 2021 all the way down to 17th place after a 7th-place finish in 2020. Now it's climbing back up to 14th, but the numbers sold in the 2023 year were consistent with the previous year's numbers.
13. Toyota Corolla
232,370 sold
The Corolla is one of the few passenger cars to have passed 200,000 units sold in 2022. A redesigned 2020 model (including a brand-new hybrid offering) helped to entice more buyers. Still, it fell just outside the top 10, where it had been firmly entrenched during the previous decade. Sales numbers have increased by over 10,000 units.
12. Tesla Model 3
232,700 sold
In 2022, Tesla history was made. For the first time, TWO fully electric vehicles ranked in the top 30 most sold in the country for a calendar year. The Tesla Model 3 used to be Tesla's #1 selling model...that is, until its SUV-ish cousin the Model Y debuted. The Model Y beat it in 2023, but the Model 3 still sold an estimated 34,000 more units over the previous year.
11. Toyota Tacoma
234,768 sold
We told you to get ready to see Toyota's name. Much like compact crossovers, mid-size pickup trucks also saw big sales gains. The Tacoma is the only mid-size truck on this list. Its sales show no signs of slowing as a redesigned model is on the horizon. Compared to 2022, the Tacoma saw a marginal drop in sales in 2023.
10. Jeep Grand Cherokee
244,594 sold
Jeep's Grand Cherokee lept to the top of Jeep's pack of models as the best-selling midsize SUV. It's no coincidence that Jeep's largest model was on a sales high when gas prices were low. Now that they are starting to creep up with inflation, time will tell if it will remain Jeep's top seller. Two new trims join the lineup in 2024, which should help sales.
9. Nissan Rogue
271,458 sold
The Nissan Rogue bumped up to the number 9 spot in 2023, up from 16th place in 2022. The Nissan Rogue sales increased 46% compared to 2022. Being one of the most affordable SUVs on the market, it's easy to see why it has gained so much popularity.
8. Toyota Camry
290,649 sold
The Toyota Camry is still the best-selling car in America, but it has fallen from higher positions in recent years as buyers move toward crossover SUVs. So, all the doom and gloom about people not buying sedans doesn't necessarily hold for the Camry. However, sales were down in 2023 compared to 2022 by around 5,000 units.
7. GMC Sierra
295,737 sold
The Sierra Trails is one of the top three truck models by a considerable margin, but GMC is making up ground since its 2019 redesign with an innovative tailgate. In 2023, the GMC Sierra offered a refresh that may have helped sales, as the Sierra had an increase of about 22% over 2022.
6. Honda CR-V
361,457 sold
Honda's best-selling SUV in 2023 was the CR-V. In the past, this crossover and the Civic have battled it out for the brand's top spot, but this year it's no contest. In recent years, buyers have preferred SUVs to sedans. In 2023, the CR-V had a 51.8% increase in sales over the previous year.
5. Tesla Model Y
385,900 sold
The Tesla Model Y is selling like hotcakes, and it is one of TWO purely electric vehicles on this list. Yes, for the first time, there are two different electric car models in the top 25. As the best-selling electric vehicle in the country, only the Tesla Model 3 came anywhere close to this number in a single calendar year. In 2023, Model Y sales increased 57%.
4. Toyota RAV4
434,943 sold
The #1 SUV and #1 non-truck in the U.S. is the best-selling Toyota RAV4, underscoring just how important the 2019 redesign was for the RAV4. Toyota didn't want to mess with a good thing. Thankfully, we still find it one of the best bets in the segment.
3. Ram Pickup
444,926 sold
While Ram Pickup sales were down compared to last year, the Ram still managed to make the list of the best-selling vehicles of last year, ranking third overall. It's the third-best-selling truck on the market and the third-best-selling vehicle, period.
2. Chevrolet Silverado
543,319 sold
Chevrolet churned out the second best-selling truck of the year with relatively few changes over the previous year. It did, however, offer a turbodiesel engine with more horsepower. Around 30,000 more Silverados were sold this year compared to last year.
1. Ford F-Series
750,789 sold
There should be no surprise here. Ford's F-Series of trucks tops the best-seller list for the 42nd year in a row. This year, Ford saw nearly 100,000 more units sold than last year. We'll see you at the top again next year, Ford.
