States with the Most Speeding Tickets

North Dakota

North Dakota

North Dakota leads the country in speeding tickets, with a whopping 8.7% of drivers with speeding tickets on their records, according to Insurify data taken from over 50 insurance providers.

Data reveals that the average insurance rate jumps from $150 to $236 for full coverage with a speeding ticket on your driving record. While this could put quite a dent in your wallet from month to month, it should be noted that speeding citation fines are as low as $15, which is not enough to deter North Dakota drivers from going over the posted speed limit.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin

  • Maximum Speed Limit: 70 mph

Around 7.8% of Wisconsin drivers go over the speed limit and get caught, nearly a full percentage less than in North Dakota. However, the consequences are greater in America’s dairy country, where you could be fined up to $800.

Wisconsin drivers pay an average of $136 per month for full coverage, while drivers with speeding tickets on their record pay an average of $215 per month.

Ohio

Ohio

Ohio ties with Wisconsin in terms of the percentage of drivers with speeding tickets. But it’s worth noting that the posted speed limit is even lower than Ohio's, making speeding incidents more likely to occur.

Ohio pays an average of $153 for full insurance coverage, but with a speeding ticket, they could pay around $225. Ohio drivers could pay up to $500 for speeding offenses, or go to jail up to 60 days for repeated offenses.

Iowa

Iowa

Speeding can happen easily in Iowa, with speed limits posted only as high as 55 mph on urban interstates. In Iowa, an average of 7.1% of drivers have a speeding violation on their record. That can make their rates go from $163 on average up to $239 with a speeding violation. In Iowa

Speeding fines can range from $20 up to $100, depending on the violation. However, speeding in school zones can get you an even heftier fine, up to $625 or 30 days in jail!

Idaho

Idaho

Despite having a posted maximum speed limit of 80 mph, 7.1% of drivers in the state can’t get enough speed—tied with Iowa. Of course, with such a sparse population, it’s evident that drivers feel comfortable at those higher speeds.

Speeding citations could land Idaho drivers anywhere from $90 to $155 in most cases. Insurance rates, meanwhile, can hike up from $141 to $218 with a speeding ticket on your record.

Wyoming

Wyoming

In 2023, around 28% of Wyoming driving fatalities were a result of someone speeding. Wyoming ranks number five when it comes to speeding thanks to 6.8% of drivers with violations.

Like Idaho, Wyoming drivers can go up to 80 mph on certain interstate sections. Fines for going over the speed limit generally range from $85 to $155. But when it comes to insurance rate increases due to violations, insurance companies don’t mess around. Drivers pay an average of $172, but with a violation, around $285—over $100 more!

South Dakota

South Dakota

South Dakota interstates have a posted speed limit of 80 mph, but its residents still feel the need to go over it. South Dakota ranks just under Wyoming with 6.7% of drivers with violations.

With fines and court fees included, many drivers end up paying between $88 to $223 for speeding. On top of that, speeding can make your insurance rates go up nearly 70%. Drivers pay an average of $173 without a speeding ticket on their record but $293 with one!

Virginia

Virginia

  • Maximum Speed Limit: 70 mph

Virginia's average insurance rate is $169, but it is $237 with a citation on record. While that might not be much of an incentive to not speed in and of itself, the penalties imposed by law enforcement should do it.

Drivers in violation could receive up to 6 months in jail or up to $1,000 in fines. Still, 6.6% of drivers are speeding anyway, which is why the state of Virginia ranks eigth.

Utah

Utah

  • Maximum Speed Limit: 65 mph

Coming in at ninth, Utah has 6.5% of drivers with speeding violations. Those with violations on their record pay an average of $258 per month, up from $180 without one.

Utah fines can range from $120 to $470. Additionally, up to 75 driving points may be docked. If you accumulate 200 points, your license could be suspended.

Oregon

Oregon
  • Percentage of drivers with speeding tickets: 6.4%
  • Maximum Speed Limit: 55 mph

Oregon has a maximum speed limit of just 55 mph, one of the lowest limits for interstates in the country – tied with Iowa. Fines are even worse for violators,  between $115 to $1,150, and suspension for extreme violations.

Comparing the average insurance rate of $173 without a violation and $270 with a violation, you’re looking at an increase of as much as $100 per month. Nevertheless, that doesn’t seem to deter the 6.4% of drivers who were caught speeding in 2023.
